Cpl. Luther Manke......

Date:

Fri, 25 Mar 2005 16:58:59 -0500

I posted a letter on Jan. 4, 2004 in which I mentioned Cpl. Manke as one of the Cadre (training non-coms) when I went through basic at Camp Fannin in early 1945. I just received a reply from a niece of his, Janette Chambers, who reported that he was killed in action on May 14, 1945 in Okinawa. According to the letter, he was unmarried and left behind only parents and brothers.
He died shortly after his 20th birthday.  I hope this is of interest to you.

Thank you for your website. My father was trained at Camp Fannin before being shipped off to Europe in WW2. He is still going strong after all these years. My father’s name is Arthur ”Chick” Joao born and raised in Hawaii and still resides there.

My Dad survived many horrible battles in WW2 received the purple heart two times . He since has had a wonderful life as a father of seven children, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He worked as a aircraft crash fire chief and retired from the Federal Aviation Adminstration after 30 years service..

My dad has spoken of Ft. Fannin many times over the years. If you have any brochures or books on Fort Fannin please let me know where I can purchase  copies. Thank you for your website.

Letters, George Harland Love

Date:

Fri, 4 Mar 2005 23:04:30 -0600

My father, George Harland Love, was stationed at Camp Fannin from approximately 1944 to 1946.  He was a Staff Sergeant and Drill Instructor.  He passed away at a young age, and our family would like more information on his army career.  If any one knew him then, or could give us some information regarding the cadre,  I would appreciate your emailing me.  I was not able to get his military records from St. Louis.  I am writing a genealogy of the Love Family, and want to include the military records of the 5 Love brothers who served in WWII. on Fort Fannin please let me know where I can purchase  copies. Thank you for your website.

In France he was assigned to the 179th Infantry, 3rd Bn., Co. My father, Keith O. Wilson was trained at Camp Fannin. I have a photo labeled Co. D 56 TR. BN. Camp Fannin - TX.
I Think that it was 43 or 44.  My dad died in 1997 so I can't really quiz him about the picture. He rarely spoke of the
war. Is there a way to find out more about the picture? Thank you for your time.

My uncle trained at Camp Fannin before being shipped to Europe in WWII. I was wondering if there were any old records of troops who trained there.
