CORRESPONDENCE: My father, George Frank Roberts, Jr., was stationed at Camp Fannin in the summer of 1945. While he was there, my mom, Phyllis, and my brother, George III, lived in a rooming house in Tyler. When Dad was sent to Okinawa, they returned home to Mooresville, MO, awaiting his return. My parents’ only visit to Tyler since that time was approximately 30 years ago. My dad lost his battle with cancer in 1999. When my mom recently planned a trip to visit us in our Duncanville, TX, home I decided to take her back to Tyler again. Pre-visit planning brought me to your website and information about the recent memorial and your search for historical information regarding Camp Fannin. I asked my mom to check among her ‘treasures’ for any information regarding Dad’s time at Camp Fannin. She brought me a copy of a list of Dad’s battalion and their “Award of Expert Infantryman Badge” printed in 30 August 1945. I want to share a copy of this list with you for use in your archives. Our visit to Tyler in September of this year was very enjoyable although we were disappointed that we were not able to find much about Camp Fannin. We did see the Memorial, which is a fantastic tribute, but were not able to get any further leads from personnel at the information desk in the Medical Center there regarding the Guide for the original site or the small markers for a drive-thru tour. I’d appreciate any information or names of contact people for any future trips we make to Tyler in search of my parents past. |
