War Memories Are Forever! is
an anthology of thirty-eight World War II veterans' war experiences. Most
of these thirty-six men and two women left the fanns and country life of
peacefulness and safety to travel across the world with strangers and
fight an enemy they could not imagine.
They encountered loneliness, heartaches, sickness, disease, battle
wounds, and for some, death. Some carried the scars and metal in their
bodies the rest of their lives. Most lived with terrifying nightmares as
they relived the smell of blood and death, the terror of night and mortar
fire, the cold and wetness of deep fox holes, and the loneliness of being
away from mothers, fathers, sweethearts, wives, and children. These are
their stories.

"I Can
Hear The Guns Now" by Thomas G. Ratliff - is a book about the
turbulent times of World War II. This book is different from the big
picture, important, battle stories of World War II. It allows the reader a
glimpse into a war torn family. The story is told from a very personal
point of view of how World War II affected Ova W. Ratliff, my
father, and our family. All of his 84 unedited letters, from his induction
to his wartime death, are in the book. Forty one of those letters were
written during the time he trained with the 14th Regiment, 65th Battalion,
Company D, at Camp Fannin, between April 8, 1944, and August 8, 1944.
Those letters let the reader feel and see the emotional agony and physical
torment that was inflicted on him and the ones he loved the most. He was
torn between his commitment to his family and his duty to his country. He
really didn’t want to go to war, but when patriotic duty called.... he put
his family on hold and answered the call to arms. The reader can sense the
intense, deep, and long lasting love between him and my mother, and the
family that union produced. People that have read this book say, this
story will trigger your emotions and tug at your heartstrings. The book
makes a powerful statement of love for family and sacrifice for country.
